Brinda:There is no business like the wedding business, do you think wedding planners like yourself have contributed to the Indian economy?
Vandana: Yes, the wedding business is the only business that offers a livelihood to all kinds of people. It brings into its fold florists, fabric manufacturers, structural engineers, people in the timber business, craftsmen ,artists, metal workers, carpenters, graphic designers ,catering companies and in turn chefs and the food industry, we employ both skilled and unskilled labour.
This business is also responsible for giving a boost to the entertainment industry and yes even to Bollywood! So yes, we are good for the economy!
Q: The mantra" Have Money will spend" holds good for our Indian weddings. You have been associated with several celebrity weddings from film stars, politicians, industrialists (recent being Sunil Mittal's daughter) and not to forget the famous Chatwal wedding, tell us how do you execute in such scale and size, it must be like an orchestra to conduct?
A: Scale is the name of the game! Organised and me?? My friends from school would have a great laugh at that. But hey guys you know all that discipline in school, chota hazari, PT and hobbies and theatre taught me a lot. We must realise that we have received so much from school.
NEVER GIVE IN. . . has made it possible for me to take up any challenge, however tough it may have been. Possibilities are endless and we can climb any hill!
So to answer your question, its thanks to team effort, discipline and a whole lot of preparation and pre event organisation.
The ability to engage with all kinds of people, professionals in different fields and bringing them all together to make the event successful.
Sanawar teaches us to mingle and spend time with kids from all over the world. I can tell you its thanks to the hill top for what am doing today! THANK YOU SNA!
Q:You are featured and quoted extensively in magazines and newspapers. . . from India Today to Vogue, Economic Times to New York Times. They all refer to you for advice on weddings. Do you feel the burden of raising the bar each time.
A:With every successful event, I always ask myself what next? We have had many challenges. I am my biggest critic... So I always look back at an event and ask myself how I could have enhanced it more. Or could I have created more of an impact? Could I have looked into more details.
Its always fun to raise the bar for myself and my team. To do that we do a lot of research. Be it in design in architecture, textiles, flowers and craft.
Q:Apart from weddings your company Backstage Productions also organises Luxury and Corporate events. You have successfully launched Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Vogue magazine in India.
A:The big design houses like Chanel, Gucci, Dior to name a few have really taught me a lot. The sense of style, the detailing, advance preparation and expecting the absolute best from yourself and everyone around you. Never accept mediocrity. In my company Backstage Productions the watch word is excellence! My clients have taught me that.
We did a launch for Dior and since the theme was garden, the Dior office flew down crockery and cutlery to match! That's detail for you.
Q:Any advice for our young Sanawarian entrepreneurs who want to venture out in this profession.
A: For any Sanawarian who wants to do event management, they better attend all hobbies classes, take house shows seriously, participate in as many Founders day activities. Do many group activities and just be AWARE! So read , be inquisitive and question things around you.
