GURJIT CHEEMA

1961-66 - Himalaya boys. Headboy 1966. (1950-00)

St. Stephens' graduate and an IAS officer. Started his career in Zero (Arunachal Pradesh) and became Deputy Commissioner, Delhi, from 1987-88. Was also Administrator of Lakshadweep for three years and then came back to Delhi as Chairman of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). He was instrumental in turning around DTC and making it a viable company. Involved in the Lahore Bus Service between Delhi and Lahore, which was started in Feb 1999. He undertook the journey with the PM's entourage to Lahore and worked with his counterpart in Pakistan to establish tourism between the two countries.

Gurjit was diagnosed with pancreatitis early this year and passed away in Apr 2000. He was a member of the OS Executive committee from 1997-99. A keen and loyal OS, who always helped others in their hour of need. He will always be remembered fondly.
